The Greenway Ultra (Part 1)

I live in the Milwaukee neighborhood of Riverwest, in a small apartment, on a dead end street, on a bluff overlooking the Milwaukee River. As a lifelong trail runner, I’m in a great position – just a 1/4 mile from the fantastic dirt trails that run throughout the Milwaukee River Greenway. Having lived here for 10 years now, I can’t even guess how many hundreds of miles I’ve run along the river. It really is a privilege to be here.

In the past six years, I’ve gotten into ultrarunning. “Ultrarunning” being defined as any running race that is longer than a marathon (26.2 miles).

  1. It started with my first 50k in 2015,
  2. which led to my personal race of #RunAroundSconnie in 2016,
  3. then the Milwaukee Running Festival also in 2016,
  4. then the Titletown Ultra (52.2 miles in 14.5 hours) in 2017,
  5. in 2018…I just took it easy…but kept running short distances,
  6. and in 2019, I went to see the SIX DAYS IN THE DOME race, which led to the Otter Creek trail marathon in Kentucky.
  7. In 2020, I did my personal race, the Greenway Progressive (similar to #RunAroundSconnie, but all on the Greenway trails).
  8. Now, for 2021, I’m planning to do another personal race – the Greenway Ultra (Part 1)!

This race, like the Riverwest+, #RunAroundSconnie, and the Greenway Progressive, will be a personal race, meaning that it IS a race…for me and anyone else who participates, but beyond that, there is nothing official about it. It’s just me and the trail and my Garmin tracking my mileage to see how many miles I can get in 12 hours on the Greenway trails.

If you want to join in the fun, the race is gonna take place on Sunday, Oct 23. START TIME 7a (sunrise is 715a, sunset if 6p).

Feel free to message me with your intention to join, and how many hours you plan to run. I’m going for 12 hours, but that doesn’t mean everyone else needs to go that distance. Come up with what is a good challenge for YOU, and commit to that!

One point of the race is to celebrate the Milwaukee River Greenway (which has been official now for 15 years!). See how they are celebrating HERE. The main point of this race, though, is just to see what I can do with 12 hours. I’m pretty excited about it, and hope some of you will consider joining me on the trails, and see what the Milwaukee River Greenway has to offer!
