MKE Comicbook Meetup

Milwaukee-area fans of comic books came together last night to socialize, get some not-yet-read comic books, and to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Gravity Connect was the site of the MKE Comicbook Meet-up/CBLDF Fundraiser, as they have so often generously been the site of past community events.

This event happened for a couple reasons – I wanted to introduce some of my good friends, who happened to all be fans of comic books, to each other; I wanted to help a friend cull her comic book collection, and I wanted to raise money to support the good work of the CBLDF! Attendees got to buy comics for $.20/each or just $2/each for trade-paperbacks. All the money raised was donated to the ComicBook Legal Defense Fund.

(if you’re not familiar with the CBLDF, then you should learn about the work they do. In brief, the CBLDF “is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the First Amendment rights of the comics medium.”)

So, last night, a bunch of fans came out and had great conversations, got excited over comics they’d been looking for, and raised $84 for the CBLDF!

Some noteworthy attendees were…

Don – a local high school teacher who incorporates comics into his lesson plans (I’ve visited his classes in the past to talk about being a photographer)

and
Jony – whose collection was being sold, and who was an amazing reader at the Free ComicBook Day’s “SPOILERS!” event!
