Two Milwaukee-area B+W Photo-Shows

Recently, I had the privilege viewing two new B+W photo exhibits on display in the Milwaukee area. One is a solo show at Mount Mary College, in Wauwatosa; the other is a group display at Grapes and Tastes, in Cedarburg. The exhibit in Wauwatosa is by photographer, and friend, Suzanne Garr. The group show in Cedarburg is comprised of images by the adult photo-education class that I teach.

The images in Suzanne Garr’s show, “Within Reach…Many Hands”, were made while Ms. Garr was volunteering at the St. Mary Kevin Motherhood Orphanage in Uganda. Suzanne spent about two weeks there this past year, and is planning to go back again this December.  There were around 30 images in the show and the ones that stood out most to me were “Uganda Series #3 (the bottle caps), #6 (boys in class), #15 (portrait–such attitude!), #17 (boys studying–great light!), #18 (feet and jump-rope), #20 (different than the other photos, on a different level of abstraction), #29 (nice light and composition).

Suzanne shot all her images with Canon cameras and printed the images with her Epson 2880 printer. They looked really nice!

The show is up until December 3–so go see it quick!

My class’ photos are on display at Grapes and Tastes, in Cedarburg. This show of 2o images is quite special as three of the five students had never done traditional darkroom printing prior to this experience! It is also the first public showing for four of the five students! The opening went very well and each student got to give a brief statement about their work to all the people present. It was pretty exciting–not only did the students get to share their work with the public, but they even got to stand up and talk about the images!

The students in my “Guided Darkroom” class are all photo-enthusiasts who have been working hard at developing their traditional wet-darkroom printing skills. I think anyone who sees the show will be quite impressed with what the students have accomplished. If you see the show, you will also get to see 4 new, never-before-shown photos of mine from the recent Day of the Dead celebration in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. This exhibit will be on display until mid-December at earliest (no firm closing date right now).

The students shot their images on a variety of films, with a variety of cameras – from Holgas, to Nikons, to 4×5 cameras, to Fujis! The images were all printed in a traditional wet darkroom at Cardinal Stritch University.
