MKE Creatives: July 2016: Creatives Roundtable

As much as we all enjoy the monthly presenters that come to MKE Creatives, we decided some time ago that we should also just have some “free” months to talk about whatever we like, to just chat about the biz. This month was that and it was SWELL. 🙂

There were only a few of us present this month, but that didn’t stop John, Paul, Lisa, and me from having a productive conversation about self-employment. Here’s some great quotes from Lisa…

  • “I >do< love the adrenaline rush of not knowing what my bank balance is going to be each month.”
  • “I’ve realized though, that if you don’t make friends with money, it won’t make friends with you.”
  • I want my life and job to be so intertwined..but I also want to >live< my own life.”

What I took from Lisa’s statements were that we often need to be committed to our work, but at the same time, need to reserve time to just “be”, as well. Life shouldn’t be 24/7 work.

Paul had some good points, too…

  • “The only security, I think, is that as long as you’re physically and mentally capable, you need to be generating some income.”
  • “Sometimes you can get locked in..and get a bit of a tunnel vision about what you’re doing.”

Again, like Lisa, I think Paul was suggesting the need for passion in our work, but not toilet our lives be too commanded by it – and to realize self-employment is a “long game”. Another point that came up frequently was one that >often< comes up – “We HAVE TO MAKE TIME to self-market, to commit to generating work for ourselves.”
