Troy In The Community: Literacy Services of WI

For over a year now, I’ve been volunteering at Literacy Services of Wisconsin. Literacy Services provides tutors to adults who want to learn to read, to improve their reading skills, or learn English as a Second Language. I have been working in the “ABE” section – Adult Basic Education. What’s neat about volunteering at Literacy Services is the one-on-one attention the students get, and the relationships that develop. Each tutor works with the same student each week. So, Sabrina, my student, and I have met over 50 times now, working on her reading. She’s made a lot of progress and I’m real glad to have met her.

Volunteers go through about 5 hours of training before they are paired with a students. Once they start regularly volunteering, they are expected to volunteer at least once a week, for 90 minutes.

If anyone is interested, Literacy Services is in very strong need of ESL tutors. Please consider sharing your personality and skills with someone in need! Look here for MORE INFO.
