“He’s got all the ants on his stick”…

…is a reference to the ant-hunting habits of bonobo chimps.  These chimps will take small branches and insert them into ant mounds.  The incensed ants bite at this woody intruder and then the chimp withdraws the stick from the mound, now covered in tasty ants, making a meal for the chimp.  So, when a person has “all the ants on his stick”, he must be doing something right.

Today I”ve got lots of “ants”–#SaveTeecycle, #MarshallArts, Classic B+W Photo Darkroom, and JobCamp4.  Read on for all the details, with relevant links at the bottom!

“The Freetimers Book of Light” at Light Ideas Gallery
September 10, 2010; 6-9:00 p.m.
This showing is part of the greater “Marshall Building Creative Professionals” evening, or as I’m calling it on Twitter, #MarshallArts”.  The Marshall Building, at the corner of Water and Buffalo, in the Third Ward, houses a plethora of artists who are all opening their studios for this evening of art appreciation and education!
The Freetimers Book of Light is a rather special collaboration, as it brings together a number of talented photographers and the arts nonprofit, Artists Working in Education.  The participating photographers wanted to create a book showcasing their work and photographer/designer Michael Koritschan, took the project in a decidedly altruistic route!  All profits made from the sale of this book will be donated to Artists Working in Education (AWE).
AWE works to bring positive art experiences to the children of Milwaukee and to also offer Milwaukee’s professional artists a means to generate income through artist-in-residencies.

Save Teecycle Benefit
September 18, 2010; 7-10:00 p.m.
Tim and Jessica Cigelske, along with their daughter Clara, are the friendly, thoughtful people behind TEECYCLE, a very clever business that sells used t-shirts and helps raise funds for the River Revitalization Foundation.  This past July, a powerful storm raged through Milwaukee, big enough to be dubbed the “Brew City Flood.”  This storm covered the ground floor of the Cigelske’s home in 12 inches of water.
This benefit is being held to raise funds for the restoration of the Cigelske’s home.  There will be free food, free music, a silent auction (to which I’ve donated one of my B+W prints), and lots of fun at the Sprecher Brewery.  I will also be on hand making photos and documenting the whole event!
Tim and I have often worked together in the past when I was producing photos for MKE and he was writing stories for them.  We climbed City Hall’s tower together, hung out with a plumber, and visited numerous diners.

B+W Darkroom at Stritch
September 22-November 23, 2010; 6:30-9:30 p.m.
I’ve been teaching adult photo education for over 10 years now and the way we make photos has changed greatly.  Now the majority of our image-making is done with digital cameras and film sales continue to diminish.  Still though, there are artists and enthusiasts who understand that analog photography possesses a charm and craft all its own.  As photographer Francis Ford said, “there is no romance in a computer screen.”
Troy Freund Photography, in collaboration with the Cardinal Stritch University Art Department, will be offering a 10-week B+W Photography Workshop.  The workshop will be a “guided darkroom”, open to photographers of all experience levels.  Troy will be present for every Wednesday night session to assist and help the participants advance their skill in classic B+W darkroom printing.
The workshop will go from Sept 22 through Nov 23, 6:30-9:30 p.m. on each Wednesday night.  For more information, please contact Troy at 414-405-7723.  Cost will be $125 for the 10 evenings
